Filmmaker Statement

Although many believe that we are living in an era of increased awareness and acceptance of LGBT rights, the reality is that life remains a challenging journey for gay individuals in their 40s and beyond, particularly those who have started families. Their struggles are often kept hidden and unspoken, but the pain is very real. I was deeply moved by Chris's bravery in pursuing her happiness in her 40s and believe that her story deserves to be shared. In many LGBT narratives, the protagonist finds solace in their parents' acceptance. However, in "Sweet Forty," the roles are reversed, as a mother is saved by her teenage daughter. Anita's determination is fueled by her daughter Robyn's unexpected support, ultimately giving her the courage to pursue her dreams. This is a powerful story of the love between a mother and her daughter.
