Filmmaker Statement

This film is about relationships in the 21st century and the effort to foster real connections with one’s friends. That quest is unfortunately made more difficult by the nature of the time we are in, where it is difficult to communicate the inner anxieties that we all sometimes have, and also a time when people seem to be more interested in their own social growth. Our main character, Khalid, feels unappreciated and unheard by his friends. He feels that the effort he puts in to do right by them goes unnoticed and he gets taken for granted. But his sense of self rests too heavily on the opinions of others and as a result he punishes himself for not succeeding by that metric. He is the “fool” because he is naive, and he didn’t prepare for the ignorant intentions of a hostile world. According to the archetype, devised by Jung, the fool is a pure heart who suffers a humiliation, a fall, but only because he sees the good without being aware of the bad in others.
