Filmmaker Statement

THE GREY UNKNOWN is a comedy short about a grey nomad coming to terms with the loss of her husband, and sharing this experience with an unlikely fellow nomad on the road to Queensland. While it has topical context, set during Covid-19 border restrictions, it is the unexpected alliance formed by two unlikely companions that underscores the creative vision for the film. The contrasting pair, and the unique (although drawing from factual anecdotal accounts) situations they encounter provides an opportunity to explore cinematic style that is grounded in a deeper emotional experience for the characters. Can an elderly widow, experiencing the loss of her husband share a journey and connect with a young man who is about to embark on his own journey of life and love? How do both these characters confront the restrictions placed on their freedoms, when home, in their view is where you roam?
