In what world would a dying man refuse lifesaving help? This is the question at the center of “The Heart of Texas”. This 15-minute drama set (and shot in) Central Texas, moves at a clip as we follow Janie, a singer- songwriter on a collision course with an undocumented worker. We see how one moment can impact both of their visions for an “American Dream”. I have observed, time and again, how the interdependence of all walks of life is essential to our country, and how the underlying inequalities that exist just below the surface can impact and influence all of us. The film explores how the policy and community can shape the fears and actions of those who live there and addresses themes of domestic policy, immigration, privilege, racism, fear of authority, hustle culture, and toxic performance culture. I believe it is the job of storytellers to explore all aspects of the human experience in a way that invites empathy and encourages us to reflect on our beliefs.
