If you've been in therapy (or on therapy Youtube/TikTok) you've probably come across this. Think of that voice, the one that criticizes you, tells you you're not good enough, you're not attractive enough, you're unlovable, whatever it is you hear. Who does it sound like? A parent? A teacher? A lover or spouse? Once you figure that out, you can start to unpack that relationship and how it made you see yourself and talk to yourself in this hurtful way. But that didn't work for me. Because that voice in my head? Was my own. Always has been. I told this to my therapist. He said this is incredibly common among gay men. We don't need others to tell us we're not enough. For us, the call is coming from inside the house. Adam's script for "The Mirror Tells Me" explored this idea in such a vulnerable, yet impressionistic way. I saw myself in it. I knew others would too. There's a mirror pun to be made here. I'll let you come up with a good one. Just take a moment to reflect on it.
