Filmmaker Statement

On the surface, The Mistake is a dramatic thriller that depicts a possible dark side of addiction. It presents itself as an imaginatively dark and extreme expression of how that path can lead someone down a terrible journey. But beneath that surface, this is a story about the strained relationship between two brothers and how that strain can create an almost uncrossable divide. We wanted to explore that intersection where complex relationship dynamics are put under the stressors of extreme circumstances, and ultimately explore how the two characters would react and deal with each other in such a situation. For this film, I drew from films such as Gone Girl, Nocturnal Animals, and Fair Play to tell this ever-changing yet dark story in a way that would provide shock and awe but also provide chilling entertainment.
