“The Places We Won’t Walk” is incredibly personal to me as someone who, like our protagonist Trevor, needs the aid of a wheelchair. Every filmmaker brings a piece of themself to each project they work on. But when I sat down to write my next short film, I knew I wanted to tackle something that touched on my deepest insecurities. Trevor is a young man who takes pride in his independence. Although the world is leaps and bounds more accessible for wheelchair users today than ever, it can still be challenging to navigate day to day living for people who need physical aid. Trevor deals with this reality each day with grace and vigor, so it’s easy for those around him, including his partner James, not to register how often Trevor’s pride takes a ding each time he has to ask for help with simple tasks and activities. At the core of this story is a fear that I believe is pretty universal — that we are a burden on our loved ones. This film is my attempt at silencing my own fears.
