Filmmaker Statement

As a queer filmmaker I’ve always been drawn to stories of community and subcommunities. Later in life I found a love for sports and physicality and its been a motivation for me to make films that meet at the intersection of connection and movement. When I met Alexa and Skate Like A Girl I knew right away how important this story was. Skate Like A Girl is a thriving community of women, gender nonconforming, and trans skaters who are expanding and transforming the traditional boundaries within skateboarding. It’s a community I wish I had as a young queer kid growing up. Alexa, a 25 year old skateboarder is a mentor, and a trans woman whose playfulness, kindness, and skills offers a refreshing view of the present and future face of skateboarding. Through her we see the power of community and how finding your community allows you to be your true self, and transcend fear.
