Filmmaker Statement

Trashed explores the fallout from years of homophobia, misogyny, addiction, love, and loss. How do we step inside our skin and identity? How do we climb out of the dark and move forward when the odds seem impossible? This film is for anyone who ever felt like they were born in the wrong body or didn’t fit. It’s essential to create content that gives space to queer, trans, and non-binary identified creatives. We collectively have so much talent, but there are fewer opportunities in an industry dominated by cisgender, heterosexual stories. The world is complex, and we can choose to see that as beautiful. Or we can continue to deny the existence of that complexity, live within rigid binaries, and restrict our worldviews. This film challenges the viewer to reject our perceived bias and look at the world from a different perspective, shedding light where it is needed. Jo née Joanne Vannicola
