I grew up in a religious household where it was believed that prayer was the solution to everything. Then at the age of nine, when a family member passed away, after much prayer and fasting, I was filled with anger, confusion and guilt. Two or More is an exploration of faith, family and acceptance. I wanted to imagine a world in which a young Black girl grappling with grief and disenchantment with religion had the space to voice those concerns to her family. While this is both specific to my childhood and fictionalized, there is also a universality to this experience that transcends the context of religion.
