Filmmaker Statement

The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world, admitting 1.7 million women per year. 55,000 of these women admitted are pregnant. More women are behind bars now than at any other point in U.S. history. This accelerated growth is predicted to continue and disproportionately affects women of color. This not only affects the mothers but also the babies being born – leading to consequences that impact generations. As people all over the nation reckon with systemic racism, films that expose Black lives directly affected by the (in)justice system need to be produced and seen. The film follows Pamela’s metamorphosis– from prison to the halls of the state Capitol; from incarcerated person to outspoken law-changer; from powerless to empowered. She realizes that she wields the most powerful tool for change--her voice and her story. Our film highlights and humanizes this crucial human rights issue through Pamela Winn's compelling personal story, and offers hope for the future.
