Filmmaker Statement

I was in search of a subject for a passion project, when the local circus was suggested. As soon as I saw an image of Xolani, without knowing his story, I felt a flood of emotion wash through me and tears in my eyes. This was a moment in my life when the relationship with my own mother was very strained, and I couldn't have imagined or planned the incredible story that would come out of this brave young man. I feel that this was no coincidence. We both needed the process of making this film for our healing at this time.
