Lisa is someone who has been rejected by society. Mistreated, mislabeled, misunderstood, she has been forced into a self-isolation, fearful of the outside world. However it was clear one thing she hadn't lost was her defiance and strength. It was these traits that first attracted me to her story. Once I got to know Lisa, her ability to wear her heart on her sleeve made for a complex character. She was very aware of her appearance, which had been changed from a criminal case and an illness but she did not shy away from the camera, expressing openly her distrust of people. But in her bitterness I sensed a need for friendship and watching her transform when inviting someone into her world was a tender moment. My hope is that by sharing Lisa's story, perceptions of those who have been discriminated against by mainstream society can be challenged. Her story shows us that no-one, no matter how lost they may seem, is beyond beginning again.
