Filmmaker Statement

Inspired by the presence of New York City's towering buildings, I began exploring the idea that "ICONS ARE ALWAYS LONELY," a lyric that became the starting point of this project. Driven by anthemic horns and synths, ICONS started first as a song before developing into an extended narrative. Taking cues from the influential documentary, "Paris is Burning" and the photography of Nan Goldin, ICONS aims to shed light on the diverse communities and subcultures that make up New York City. Full of voice overs and musical scoring, I wanted ICONS to sit outside of traditional music-video format. Shot on 16mm, ICONS sheds light on voguing and LGBTQ+ communities, as well as sport, street culture, and the world of adult entertainment - acknowledging their unique stories and challenges. My hope is that this film captures the spirit of triumph and self-love when a city embraces individuality, community and diversity.
