I can happily announce that June is by far the dumbest, most pointless film I’ve ever made, and I truly could not be more relieved. I am proud to say that my leading ladies are not vehicles to make statements about womanhood on any scale, by any means.. June was meant to be a challenge for all of the women involved; to dare to not be brilliant. With some of my biggest filmic inspirations being Superbad, Anchorman, Napoleon Dynamite, and 21 Jump Street, I wanted June to have the same freedom and privilege as many of the male-lead comedies from the early 2000s: the freedom to be messy, to be imperfect, and most importantly, to be dumb. June combines bimbo-humor and classically unlikable, dim-witted protagonists to create an absolutely pointless and totally uncool anti-feminist, (feminist) comedy. Bringing these deeply flawed and ultimately uncomplex female characters to life was by far the most creatively freeing and flat out enjoyable experience I’ve had as a filmmaker and collaborator.
